Nick Tsiavos - Contrabass
Anthony Schulz - Piano Accordian
Achilles Yiangoulli - 6 String Bouzouki

"Their surprising, beautiful, somewhat mysterious music is often, simultaneously, ancient, modern, intricately constructed & improvisatory. ... Ananke is the Greek word for necessity. It's also a wide-open, occasional trio of Achilles Yiangoulli, Nick Tsiavos & Anthony Schulz - respectively, a fine singer & bouzouki player, a double bassist whose mastery of the bow reminds you that his instrument is a bass violin, & a virtuoso accordionist." - comment by Doug Spencer, The Planet, ABC Radio National

They're also one half of the sextet, Eurotrash Taksim, with soprano Deborah Kayser, percussionist Peter Neville & reeds player Tim O'Dwyer. Jouissance - Akathistos Fragments (ABC Classics)
Nick Tsiavos - Contrabass
Peter Neville - Percussion
Deborah Kayser - Soprano
Anne Norman - Shakuhachi
Jerzy Kozlowski – Bass/ Baritone

The Akathistos Hymn, an intensely beautiful set of melismatic chant sung in praise of the Virgin Mary, is one of the high points of Byzantine art. The hymns' various texts are multilayered in meaning and rich with cascades of rapturous imagery. This recording is the performers' homage to this sacred and potent text, as well as a critical and questioning engagement with it.
